2016 High School Oratory Contest

This speech contest is designed to give today's youth an opportunity to express creative ideas, and concepts while motivating and inform others through the art of public speaking. It provides graduating seniors an opportunity to compete for college scholarships and express their views on a pre-assigned topic.

This is the first year the International Association Of Black Professional Fire Fighters in cooperation with the Black Chief Officers Committee of Little Rock will present an Oratorical Contest . We hope that this contest will bring out the very best in students’ speaking efforts. The top-level prizes in scholarships are as follows:

How to Enter

Interested students will prepare a 3-5 minute speech on the pre assigned topic to be presented at the Oratory Contest. The speeches are first judged at their local school level (preliminary). Little Rock School District High Schools will select three participant/winners from their school to participant in the district wide contest. Participants/winners selected from the local high will go on to the District wide contest (semifinals) competing with other local school level winners for the top three finalist placement. The top three finalists will go on to the national association contest to be held March 19th 2016 at the Black Chief Officers Committee Conference at the Little Rock Marriot Hotel.

Eligibility

This contest is open to all Little Rock School District High School Seniors who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent. There is no minimum age.

Topic

Diversity although people define it differently from their perspective- The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.  It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences.  What does diversity mean to you and why?

Length of Speech

The speech must be at least 3 minutes but not over 5 minutes in length.

Prizes

District Level - The top three Finalist winners will each receive college scholarship money for:

  • 1st Place -  
  • 2nd Place -  
  • 3rd Place -  

Key Dates

Entries must be received by Contest Chair by February 25, 2016 4:00pm.

Important: At the time of entry, all of the following documents must be provided to the contest chair:

  1. Copy of the application
  2. A typed, double-spaced copy of the speech.

The district level contest will be held on March 1, 2016 at 5:30pm.
