Literacy Coach

Teaching all students to read is a complex task that requires teachers to have a sophisticated understanding of how students learn to read, a thorough understanding of appropriate interventions that can be used to help struggling readers keep up with their peers, and an ability to use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners (National Reading Panel, 2000). It is clear that if schools are to rise to the challenge of leaving no child behind, they must take steps to ensure that all elementary school teachers are well-trained, highly effective reading teachers and secondary schools develop effective literacy instruction, especially for struggling students who need to acquire strong comprehension skills and build vocabulary.

Literacy Coach:The Literacy Coach works to sustain comprehensive literacy in all grades. Comprehensive literacy is an approach to meeting the needs of all students through whole and small group instruction. The literacy coach collaborates with teachers to provide support in reading and writing.

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read."— Marilyn Jager Adams
