Band

The Dunbar Mighty Bobcat Band is currently boasting 97 students and still counting.  Thanks to the administrative support, staff collaboration, and community support, the band actively performs at athletic events, concerts, festivals, and various community events.  We currently have three levels of the band program: Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, and Advanced Band.  Through Beginning Band, the beginner students will learn all of the rudimentary lessons about each of their individual instruments, basic music reading, audience etiquette, and will have the opportunity to perform for the student body.  Through Intermediate Band, the students will continue to perfect their craft as they improve music reading and perform for all school events and some community engagements.  Through Advanced Band, the students will further their musical endeavors as they are required to perform for all requested events and read music to the highest standard possible. Thank you for your interest in our music program and feel free to direct all inquiries to my email address jose.holloway@lrsd.org.

Choir

The Dunbar Magnet Middle School Choir is a co-ed mixed choir that will sing a variation of repertoire. This group is compiled of students who have previous choral experience and have shown an interest in continuing on to a higher level of music education choral performance. Students are asked to perform during extracurricular activities such as Assemblies, Athletic events, and other events that represent Dunbar Magnet Middle School as we support our community and great city of Little Rock.

Our students have performed annually with the Arkansas Choral Director’s Association (ARKCDA) in the All-Region competition and have consistently earned spots in the All- Region Choir.  In 2015, students from the Dunbar Choir were a part of the children’s choir in the Opera in the Rock’s production of Puccini’s Italian opera La Bohème having the opportunity to sing with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra with Ms. Gordon as the “Children’s Chorus Master”. The students have also performed annually in the LRSD’s Artistry in the Rock! This year the Dunbar Magnet Middle School Choir, also known as the DMMS Singers, had the opportunity to sing for a program highlighting music from the Civil Rights era in front of the Governor, Mayor, and a list of other dignitaries. Dunbar’s choir works hard to encourage life skills, high academics, and teach that music is a skill that can be used as a vocation as well as a perfected art form. Our students enter as beginner singers, but graduate as improved musicians. Ms. Gordon believes that our students learn through performance as they apply the skills learned in class.
