Dunbar Magnet Middle School provides opportunities for students to play Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, and Track & Field.  Our program has won city Championships 5 out of the last 7 years in football and 4 out of the last 7 years in basketball.  Volleyball has also been champions and runners-up for several years.  The coaching staff is made up of the following:

  • Football Coaches: Springer, Murry, Turner, Harris, and Mundy
  • Boys Basketball Coaches: Mundy and Springer
  • Girls Basketball Coaches: Turner and Finley
  • Volleyball Coaches: Clayborn and Gordon
  • Soccer Coach: Finley
  • Track & Field Coaches: Mundy and Finley

 

Dunbar Drill Team

Dunbar Drill Team is comprised of 7th and 8th grade girls who cheer and perform at sporting events and school events. The girls tryout in the spring for the next school year. We practice everyday except Fridays after school, and attend all football and basketball games. The Girls perform during halftime of the football games and basketball games. The girls have also participated in various events at Dunbar such as 6th Grade Orientation, Open House, and other parent involvement nights. Drill team is a commitment the girls make for a year. Girls on the squad must have outstanding grades and present themselves as role models for Dunbar Middle School. Coach Ms. Bonnita Rowe

 

Dunbar Cheer Squad

Cheer Coach: Amber Hellekson

The Dunbar Cheer Squad is comprised of 7th and 8th grade girls who cheer and perform at sporting events and school events.  6th and 7th grade girls are required to try out in the spring in order to be a member of the squad the next school year.  A parental consent form and physical is required; it is suggested that a physical be obtained by March.  

Cheer practices after school every day except Friday, but will practice on Fridays if deemed necessary for the following week's performance.  The squad is also trained by NCA (National Cheerleading Association) instructors in SAFE stunting.  

The cheerleaders perform during halftime of the football games and basketball games. The squad has also participated in various events at Dunbar such as 6th Grade Orientation, Open House, and other parent involvement nights.  Cheer Squad is a commitment the girls make for a year.  Girls on the squad must have outstanding grades and present themselves as role models for Dunbar Middle School.  The current Cheer Squad has an average GPA of 3.29, with the highest GPA being a 4.0 and the lowest GPA being a 3.0.
